CERTIFICATE IN REHABILITATION COUNSELLING

Introduction

Conducted by the School of Social Work , the Certificate in Rehabilitation Counselling course is a full-time, one semester programme. It was initiated to cater to the needs of organisations working in the field of the disability rehabilitation to create a cadre of personnel with specialised competency in comprehensive counselling and community-based rehabilitation services to individuals with disability and their families.

The programme is geared for direct intervention with all major categories of the disabled: the hearing impaired, visually impaired, orthopaedically impaired, persons with cerebral palsy, the mentally disabled, learning disabled and persons handicapped due to leprosy.

Course Outline

Theory Courses

The course has 16 credit hours. Candidates will be required to take the seven basic courses that are compulsory (RC 1 to RC 7). In addition, they should opt for one out of the three optional (elective) courses listed below.

Field Work

Field work has 6 credit hours. Two full days in a week will be devoted to field work. In addition to this, there will also be block field work at the end of the programme covering a total of 210 hours. Candidates will undertake field work in agencies working with people with disability under the supervision of the faculty of the Institute or personnel of the organisation.

Eligibility

Graduates in any discipline with a minimum of 40% of the aggregate marks are eligible. Preference will be given to applicants who are Graduates in Psychology, Social Work or have had training in Special Education. Preference will also be given to Graduates with at least two years experience in Social Welfare or Disabled Welfare.

Selection Procedure

Those applicants satisfying eligibility requirements will be interviewed.
