The Center for Public Health, School of Health Systems Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) welcomes applications for its 'Study in India Program on Public Health in India'.

About the Program:

Rapid urbanization, increase in globalization and growing inequities between and within nations, has created a greater role for public health across nations than ever before. Public health or the health of populations is the outcome of national health systems, which are a composite of the organization of curative care services, preventive and promotive health care, with integrated action on the social determinants of health. Health systems are complex adaptive systems and their evolution is influenced by their own path of development, the socio-cultural and economic contexts in which they evolve, and the influence wielded by different stakeholders. Studying health systems and their potential to ensure public health across national contexts help understand not only how health systems have evolved in other nations; it also makes us reflect on our own health systems with fresh eyes from a public health perspective.

The Study in India Program on public health has the following objectives:

  • To understand the challenges of public health in India and how public health policy and strategies seek
  • to address these challenges
  • To study the practices of national health care systems and their impact on public health
  • To provide opportunity of cross-cultural experiences on public health issues through field based learning
  • and through seminars organized by the host institution
  • To provide exposure to the multi-faceted culture in India

Over the next 14 days students will be provided an overview of public health infrastructure via informatory visits to private and public health-care institutes as well as not-for profit organizations working towards public health.
