Constructing Unsustainability: The Interplay of Drivers and Outcomes in Indian Cities

8th October 2020, 2 pm

Abstract; This lecture will explore a basic question: how do we conceptualize the unsustainability of Indian cities? It will make the argument that we need to understand cities as open systems of systems. These systems are of various kinds: social, ecological, economic, those related to governance institutions, and of other kinds. And they are in the interplay. This basic point is important to dwell on because the segmentation of knowledge and institutional structures along specializations is leading to fragmented knowledge and policy responses.

About the Speaker: Himanshu Burte, an architect and urbanist, is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Urban Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai (IIT-B).
