Managers as Coaches

What is the programme about?
Coaching across sectors is now acknowledged as an effective learning and development intervention in both organizational settings and at personal level. It is applied to a variety of areas, such as motivating staff, delegating tasks, problem solving, relationship issues, team building, and staff development.

The proposed programme, “Managers as a Coaches” aims to equip managers with basic coaching skills. Through regular coaching conversations, managers will not only be able to lead and develop their subordinates but will also be able to encourage, support and inspire their teams to develop trust and ultimately enhance employee engagement and performance.

What will be salient features of the “Managers as Coaches“ programme?

Some of the unique features of this coach training programme will be:
This specific coach training programme will be tailor designed to suit the unique needs/ challenges of those working in the developmental sector
Case studies from the field will form an integral part of the training
Intake of participants will be limited to ensure an intensive reflective practice model of training delivery

Who should attend?
The programme is mainly designed for professionals and practitioners in the specialized functions in the social science sector with supervisory responsibilities or coaching roles. On completion of the programme, participants will be able to apply their coaching skills in their respective roles as leaders, programme supervisors, youth development coaches, training and development specialists.

Objectives of the programme
The Fundamentals of Coaching programme is designed for managers who wish to obtain an understanding of the new and growing field of Coaching as a management tool. The objectives of the programme are-

  1. To introduce coaching as a management tool to managers or team leaders
  2. To provide knowledge and skills that will enable managers to create a coaching culture within organizations

Programme details

All the sessions in the programme will be designed keeping principles of adult learning at fore. The course will be delivered in the form of lectures, group discussions, pair coaching, coaching trios, debriefing and feedback. The programme schedule is paced in a manner whereby participants will be practicing their learnings in between the sessions.

Topics will include:

  1. Coaching manager and traditional manager
  2. Difference between Coaching and other forms of learning and development approaches
  3. Models of Coaching for managers to practice
  4. Listening and active listening
  5. Asking versus telling
  6. Giving Feedback

Days/ Time : Three full Sundays from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

Entry Requirement

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree
  • Have at least one year of experience in supervisory role

Fees :

About the Resource Person


 Dr. Shamim Suryavanshi

Shamim Suryavanshi has acquired her Executive Diploma in Corporate Coaching with a distinction from The University of Hong Kong’s School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKUSPACE). She has been practicing Coaching and engage in intensive training and development. Alongside, Shamim has 22 years of experience in the field of Education wherein she has worked in diverse kinds of organizations and set ups. Her understanding of psychology, learning, leadership, & personal development enables her to work with men and women across professional, cultural and national backgrounds. Her doctoral research was a cross-cultural cross-national comparative study in teacher education.

Having lived in world’s two mega cities- Hong Kong & Mumbai- further adds to Shamim’s repertoire of skills as well as understanding of societies and human potential.
