Dr. Nitin Dhaktode is an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Electoral Management Studies, School of Development Studies (SDS), Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai. He holds a Ph.D. and M-Phil in Development Studies from TISS, Mumbai. He completed his MA in Social Work with a concentration in Community Organisation and Development Practices (CODP), and a BA (Hon) in Social Work with Specialization in Rural Development from TISS, Mumbai, and Tuljapur respectively. Having trained in Social Work and Development Studies, he carries a deep understanding of the socio-political and economic issues in multidimensional rural and urban societies and the significance of theory and practice-oriented education. Nitin secured an opportunity to study at the University of Klagenfurt, Austria as part of the Ph.D. semester exchange program. Moreover, he completed online certificate courses titled “U. S. Public Policy: Social, Economic, and Foreign Policies” and "Citizen Politics in America: Public Opinion, Elections Groups, and the Media" at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, USA.
Nitin worked on social policies, politics of policy implementation at the grassroots, democracy, and governance through transparency and accountability by implementing various tools such as a social audit in the field and research. Nitin introduced the 'theory of social corruption' through his Ph.D. research on NREGA and social audit that unfolds the sociology of corruption derived from caste-based social capital, political power, and favoritism in public policy implementation at the grassroots. He worked with the Dedicated Commission for Backward Class Citizens (BCC) reservation in local bodies appointed by the Government of Maharashtra in 2022. Nitin played an important role in designing the course curriculum of the Masters in International Electoral Management and Practices (MIEMP) the unique program offered by the Centre for Electoral Management and Studies (CEMS) - SDS TISS, Mumbai in collaboration with the Election Commission of India (ECI) - India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM), New Delhi. He has also contributed to developing the training manual on social audit for the Government of India to create the social auditor's cadre across the nation (http://nirdpr.org.in/nird_docs/socialaudit/English-sa.pdf)
